One of the parts of the retreat I find alarming is that many employers cut or stopped paying for educational programs for employees. This left many employees in the uncomfortable position of paying for their own pro growth and development, or worse, going without.
Education is one of the priorities in my career and in my life. I'm quite bright about a lot of things and love learning. The longer I write resumes and coach clients while their job searches, I find more and more citizen who feel the same way.
I am an entrepreneur and small business owner. It's no hidden I'm going to pay for my own study and pro development. For example, I attended the career Directors International 2010 Summit in in San Diego, Ca, in mid-October. It was an exceptional and qualified learning experience. I was excited to greet friends I haven't seen for a year and meet new writers and coaches. I learned new skills and information I will share with you in the arrival weeks. But I knew going in whose reputation card it was going on.
If I had been accustomed to my employer's paying for this conference and had suddenly found that I had to add it to my household budget, would it have been a big priority? I'd have had to weigh it out. Would it have an Roi such as a subsequent raise or promotion? Would it make me more primary to my current or time to come employer? Does it offer an intrinsic value to me such as fulfilling my love of learning?
What about you? Have you had to make this difficult decision? Have you found other ways to educate yourself and growth your pro value?
