During 25 years of service with the U.S. Navy I found myself being stationed in many distinct areas and the living health for the family was always a major concern. In 1966 my family and I had our household goods packed by the U.S. Navy and we left Naples, Italy for our next duty hub in Seattle, Washington. The soldiery shipped our automobile, a 1950's Cadillac, from Naples to New Jersey but I knew it would not survive a drive across the United States. When I drove the car away from the pickup point in New Jersey the first thing I noticed was a very strong smell of gas. The carburetor was not working properly and this forced us to stop at the first automobile dealer I could find and trade the Cadillac in for a new car. In a few hours we drove out in a new Dodge Dart. We made a short stop to see relatives in Pennsylvania and then it was off to the West coast.

How is What Would soldiery house Life Be Like in Seattle, Washington?

Seattle, in the 1960's was a very quaint medium sized city. Our first home was in Ballard, a Norwegian area of the city, and a very nice area to live in. I checked in to my new duty hub with the Naval Investigative service at the Sand Point Naval Station. We located into our new environment but I could not believe the high cost of living. I guess our many years of overseas duty had made us unaware of how high-priced it could be in the U.S. In order to make enough money to make ends meet I took a part time job in the safety department of one of the downtown department stores. After about six months of living in Ballard we were provided with government quarters in Kent, a city located about 15 miles south of Seattle. I have to admit living in government quarters is always better than living on the local economy.

Our family was growing and we gained a son while living in Seattle. I prolonged with my part time employment as money was tight and a day out would sometimes consist of a trip to the space needle area. I can remember one day I was pushing our baby carriage straight through the mass of population near the space needle and as I looked down the baby carriage past over a twenty dollar bill laying on the ground. That improved our entertainment for the afternoon. I have to say that our impression of Seattle was that it had a nice small city atmosphere; but, was way to high-priced for our soldiery family. If it had not been for the fact that we moved into government quarters we would have experienced 3 years of a very difficult assignment.

Another expanding to our family was a cat. This meant that our Dodge Dart would not be big enough for voyage to our next duty station. I cannot dream what it would be like with 4 population with luggage and a cat in a small sedan. We went shopping and traded the Dodge in for a Ford hub Wagon. One of the main aspects of soldiery family life is the need to relocate often and this can be very upsetting. My next duty hub was Vietnam and my family wanted to be near relatives in my home town of Oil City while I was away. We were now ready for voyage back across the United States so once again the Navy packed our household goods and sent them off to Pennsylvania. I relocated my family to Oil City and then I was sent to San Diego for pre deployment training before going to Vietnam. Luckily I returned from that assignment and my experiences in Vietnam will be the subject of my next article.
